Where Do Radish Seeds Come From?

Growing Radishes from Seed to Harvest—and Beyond

By allowing your radish plants to complete their full life cycle in the garden instead of harvesting them early, you can gain valuable insights into how they grow. Try leaving a few radish plants in the ground beyond their ideal harvest time—you won’t regret it. Although you’ll have to give up a few tender, crunchy roots (since seeds develop only after the roots become inedible), you’ll learn much more about these quick-growing vegetables.

Where Do Radish Seeds Come From?

Radishes thrive in cool weather and shorter daylight hours, which is why they grow best in early spring and fall when temperatures usually stay between 50 and 65°F. Once temperatures rise above around 80°F and the days lengthen, radishes begin to bolt. Bolting means the plant shifts its energy from root growth to producing seeds for the next generation.

During bolting, the radish produces delicate purple and white flowers, while the root itself becomes tough, starchy, and bitter. This change happens because the plant redirects its resources away from the edible bulb and toward seed development.

You might assume that radish seeds come directly from the flowers, as they do with many plants. However, radishes are a bit different.

As members of the Brassica family, radishes develop their seeds inside green, bean-like pods that grow along the stems. These seed pods protect the developing seeds until they’re ready. Interestingly, when these pods are still green, they’re completely edible and share the same peppery flavor and crisp texture as a perfectly harvested radish root.
